Announcing Lexington Developmental Disability Awareness Month Essay and Poster Contest

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and to celebrate, Lexington is sponsoring an essay contest for high school and junior high students, as well as a poster contest for elementary students in Fulton and Montgomery County Schools. This year’s theme is “Can Do! Like You!” The purpose of the contest is to raise awareness of the value and importance of inclusion and to promote awareness of disabilities.

The contest is open to any student enrolled in Fulton and Montgomery County Schools. Only one entry per participant will be accepted. Guidelines and registration forms are available at all schools or at 465 North Perry Street, Johnstown, NY. The deadline for entries is March 18, 2015.

Judging for both contests will be based on creativity, clarity, originality, sensitivity to issues facing people with disabilities and knowledge about disability issues. Entries will be grouped into several categories based on grade level, and awards will be given to first, second and third place winners in each category. Prize baskets with Flame merchandise and Chamber Checks will be awarded to the winners and the prize for the winning essay is $100. Prizes will be given out at Lexington’s upcoming Rock for Abilities concert featuring Flame on March 27, 2015 from 6:30pm-8:30pm at 127 East State Street, Gloversville, NY. The concert is open to the public and tickets cost $5.00.

“We are extremely excited about the contest,” said Lynette May, contest coordinator. “We want children to understand that people with disabilities are like everyone else – they are people first. This contest will allow our children to serve as advocates for disabilities awareness.”
